Salamanca-born researcher and doctor Sara Cuadrado-Castaño will be the announcer of the 2025 Salamanca Fairs and Festivals in recognition of her outstanding professional career in scientific research, as well as her commitment to disseminating knowledge and promoting Salamanca's talent nationally and internationally. Sara Cuadrado-Castaño has unquestionable international prestige, as well as a long and recognized track record in the fight against cancer.
Born in Salamanca in 1978, she graduated in Biology and Biochemistry from the University of Salamanca and received her PhD with honors. Her predoctoral work was selected by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, awarding her the National Archimedes Prize for Young Researchers in Biomedicine (2007). A researcher in the Department of Microbiology at Mount Sinai in New York, she continues to design virotherapies for cancers such as lung, brain, breast, colon, and melanoma.
Sara Cuadrado-Castaño, a pioneer in the use of viruses to eradicate tumors, recently launched Virofend Therapeutics at the City Council's Biotechnology Business Incubator (Abioinnova). This company will launch clinical trials in Salamanca for the research she is conducting at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, based on an innovative technology involving the design of viruses to treat cancer. This research, which will begin human trials in the coming months, has demonstrated in the preclinical phase that it cures 100% of colon cancer cases and causes the disappearance of all other tumors.
The researcher will deliver the speech from the balcony of Salamanca City Hall on September 8, following the celebration of mass in honor of Santa María de la Vega, the city's patron saint.
